Tussen iemand en niemand
Joseph Brodsky's versatile work, including autobiographical essays, city descriptions, cultural-historical reflections, and literary commentary on admired colleagues, could be best summarized in his own words: "A great writer is someone who offers a desperate person a way out, a pattern to follow." Brodsky, born in 1940 in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), emigrated to America in 1972 and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1987. Upon his passing in 1996, he was hailed in NRC Handelsblad as not just the greatest Russian poet of his time, but the very embodiment of Russian poetry in the modern era - both in his home country and abroad.
